New to Guild Wars
Hey, I'm brand new to guild wars and I have made a ranger on Prophecies. I am at the end of pre-searing having done every quest except for the secondary class trials.
Now I am completely lost as per which secondary class I want; I want a secondary class that will help me a lot in PvE mostly solo but won't be useless for PvP.
I've read through a few guides as well as the quick guide to playing on a ranger and I still have no idea :S.
If anybody could help me out I would vastly appreciate it.

For the most part, your pve character WILL be totaly useless for pvp. So use one of your character slots to make a pvp character if that's what you are interested in.
As for your ranger, you can make anything work effectively for a secondary, and later in the game you'll be able to change secondaries. I would suggest that rather than trying to get people to tell you what is "best," you look at some builds either here on guru or on pvxwiki, then choose the secondary that corresponds to a build you like.

Later in the game you get to change secondaries at will. but for now being a prophecies player I would say go Elementalist for the ability to Conjure and stack damage on a bow of the same element (i.e. Conjure frost+ icy bow) because these stack with preparations and let you spike for good damage output. The ranger class has good self healing with troll Ungent. Mesmer would be my second choice for mantras and such that negate elemental damage buffing rangers armor ability to withstand elemental magic and conditions.
for the most part with ranger you will be running a pretty full bar of ranger skills. later as you get into different skill builds, and after you ascend and unlock the ability to get different secondaries you may want to look into ritualist, mesmer, paragon, and dervish.
I think Elementalist will fit the bill for now if your a heavy bow user

There are quite a few options for a Ranger as a secondary. Also while the game gives you the impression that you can never change your secondary, you can. About 3/4s of the way through the game you can the ability to change your secondary as you please, upon the completion of profession specific quests.
As for what to choose at the moment, take a look at the Ranger sections here:
www.pvxwiki.com
You'll see a lot of builds there that utilize secondaries differently, i'm sure you can find a build you would like to eventually run.

Alright thanks for the advise guys and it's not that I want the BEST secondary I simply want something that will be above average at PvE and around average at PvP but I will follow Theoden's advise and have a separate character for PvP.
Also I guess I will try out elementalist and thanks for the heads up that I'll be able to change my secondary later on in the game.

secondaries on rangers actually doesn't matter much. as of right now, you can make a fully competitive ranger build without dipping into secondary skills at all.

Once you exit Pre Searing you will no longer have to play "solo" there are NPC henchman that will assist you if you want. So no need to worry there, soloing will come along far later in the game.
I suggest finding a build that you have fun with, not a build that is set up so that if you don't di it right you die.
Besides, right now your about level 6? maybe 7? You really don't have enough attribute points to be tossing around everywhere. You really should be concentrating on Marksmanship and Expertise at this point. Wait until you are level 15ish or so before you thin yourself out to a secondary. Around level 10-12 myabe try some Wilderness Survival stuff some though.

Rangers generally dont need a secondary prof. If your planning on sticking with your bow as your primary weapon, Conjure spells from the elementalist attribute are usefull.
If you plan on using a weapon thats not your bow or pet, obviosly go with the secondary prof that corresponds with that weapon.
GW is not a solo game, it is based around team play. The only time you should have less than the maximum number of party members is if you are doing a dedicated farm.
In terms of PvP, you should create a PvP only character, these start at level 20 with max armour/weapons etc. And they offer quick customisation of armour/runes/etc.
Generally a rangers role in the party is either:
1) Shut down opposing casters
2) Deliver spike damage
3) Spread Conditions
4) Interrupting skills
Often a couple of these will be combined into one skill bar.

I advise against going /E because of reliance on elemental bowstrings. That means whenever you get a new bow, you have to get a new bowstring, or salvage the old one.
Since this choice only matters up until you're able to change your secondary, I would say go either /Mo for [[Rebirth], or /W for [[Frenzy] for a maintainable IAS.

For pve, i would go Monk for the rez. The ranger is good with only is skill, to be able to rez your henchman more than once until you get the ability of changing secondary will probably be the more useful.

I went with a R/me and I found it handy to use the mesmer spell [epidemic] to spread daze and choking dust which is especially handy in shutting down casters and monks. The R/me combo is nice too when you pair it with the mesmer elite [echo] in the UW with the trapper duo build and just a fun all around solo farming build, which I'm just getting into and having a lot of fun. I think it's a good combo.
As others have said, later you can change your secondary. My second secondary is ritualist for splinter barrage for FoW and it works well against the big mobs you find in the Asuran area (Eye of the North). And it's a cool combo to do a really fast vanquish on Magus Stones. Plus the rt gives you the [flesh of my flesh] for rez.
I'm personally not big on the monk secondary but everyone has their own methods of playing.

as others have said it really doesn't matter what you choose now as you will be able to change it after you ascend. I will recommend the Warrior to you because Warrior gets quite a lot of skills early on, and you can mix things up by trying out different weapons. not that anything other than a bow will be as effective on a Ranger but they work to some extent. also as you don't really need a secondary this choice really doesn't matter so just experiment.

I went R/Mo for Mending Touch...Also, R/E is good for conjure skills and R/Rt is good for Splinter Barrage.

Unless you purposefully didn't link back to the quoted argument, Kindle Arrows is not an enchantment.
